Guangzhou Port Group announced on September 20 the commencement of berth expansion at the Nansha Grain and General Cargo Terminal.

With an estimated investment of 17.74 billion yuan, the expansion project consists of eight additional berths, two for 100,000-ton general cargos, one for 40,000-ton breakbulk and five for 5,000-ton barges. Anticipated to be put into use in March 2022, the berths are designed primarily to handle grain, steel, wood and mechanical equipment, with an expected annual throughput capacity of 12.49 million tons. The project will extend the existing quay length to 3.6 kilometers.

The project will promote efficient logistics for allocating grain, steel and bulk commodities and upgrade the role of Nansha Port as a grain distribution hub for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, an official of the port authority said at the commencement ceremony.

Guangzhou Port has developed a strong grain supply network for South China, with the Nansha Grain and General Cargo Terminal on the west bank of the Pearl River, and the Xinsha Grain Terminal and the Xingang Terminal in the Huangpu Port Area on the east bank. The port has five berths for bulk grains and a storage capacity of about 1.35 million tons. In 2018, Guangzhou Port handled 17.60 million tons of grain, a half of the grain being shipped into the province.

As a main grain transshipment port for South China, Guangzhou Port has undertaken several construction projects to enhance its capacity in grain operation, including the Phase II Xinsha Grain Terminal and the Phase II Silo Project of the Nansha Grain and General Cargo Terminal. Both are expected to be completed in 2020. When all the projects are accomplished, Guangzhou Port will boast 21 berths for 100,000 tons of general cargo and grain, as well as an annual throughput exceeding 35 million tons and a storage capacity over 2.6 million tons, which will better secure grain supplies for the covered regions.
