Trial operation of phase three of Guangzhou's Nansha Port container terminal

Phase three of the container terminal at Nansha Port, worth almost CNY7.5 billion (USD1.1 billion), is now up and running on May 3rd, according to China News Service.

The third phase includes six 10,000-ton deep-water berths and 24 barge berths, and combined with the first two phases renders the port, located in the southern city of Guangzhou, able to unload the world's largest container vessels.

Five foreign trade container shipping routes are now available, and there are plans to increase annual capacity to handle three million standard containers this year, Guangzhou Port Group Co. said.

With the completion of phase three, the major shoreline at the Nansha Port is 5,718 meters, with sixteen 10,000-ton professional deep-water berths in operation alongside 61 container cranes for Post-Panamax container ships, like supertankers and ultra-large container vessels.

The project will cement Guangzhou's position as an international shipping center, the group added, saying the port will contribute to the city's participation in the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay Area.
