China sees port throughput growth in the first 8 months
SOURCE: gangkouquan |UPDATED: 2019-09-30Visit Statistics:

China's cargo throughput at ports grew 7.9 percent to about 9 billion tons in the first eight months this year, compared with the same period of 2018, official data from the Ministry of Transport showed.

Foreign trade cargo throughput amounted to 2.86 billion tons in the January-August period, up 3.8 percent year on year. Container throughput at ports enjoyed a 5 percent increase in the period to 172.39 million TEUs.

Port rankings concerning cargo and container throughput respectively have remained stable since January. Ningbo-Zhoushan Port took the crown for cargo throughput, exceeding 752 million tons in the first 8 months, far leading second-placed Port of Shanghai by nearly 300 million tons.

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is expected to keep on top with several cooperation projects developed in August. The port has penned a memorandum of understanding with Brazil's Vale, the world's largest iron ore supplier. It also joined hands with the local government of Northeast China’s Jilin Province and inaugurated the Hunchun International Port. Daily trains have been scheduled since the port started to transport coal by rail in place of road.

The cargo throughput of the Port of Shanghai reported three straight months of year-over-year declines, probably caused by the reduction of coal and other bulk cargos, as China’s environmental policy has been pushing forward. However, its container throughput saw a steady rise, topping others in the Jan-Aug period.

Major ports in Shandong Province also reported throughput growth after integration into the provincial port group in August. The first 8-month cargo throughput of Weihai and Yantai ports were up 32.3% and 11% respectively. Qingdao Port, the biggest port in the province, saw an increase of 8.3% in cargo throughput and 9.6% in container throughput.

Guangzhou Port pulled ahead of Qingdao Port and ranked 4th in both cargo and container throughput, partly due to the completion and acceptance of its smart port project in August. The port also runs the country’s largest automotive terminal.

Cargo and container throughput of Suzhou Port were down slightly but have strong growth potential, since Suzhou city is listed in August as one of the new pilot free trade zones of China.

Dalian Port dropped 11.6% and Yingkou Port 12% in container throughput.
